“In high school I wanted to become a teacher… until I took accounting. I loved math and accounting and never looked back. I took the CPA track at Utica College and started at Gustafson two weeks after graduation in 1989.

“Now I get to be a teacher one-on-one with my clients. I teach them ways to prepare their books that saves them time and money…and that makes sense for both of us. And through our consultations I help my clients better understand their businesses. They also like the fact that we’re here for them all year, not just during tax season.”

Julie started her career in accounting immediately after graduating from Utica College with a Bachelor of Science degree in May of 1989. She started with Gustafson & Co. in the same month and has been with the firm ever since. She obtained her CPA in 1993 and today is partner at the Canastota office specializing in tax for business, individuals, estates, and trusts.

Julie and her daughter live in Oneida Castle. She’s Treasurer of the Clayville Library Association, member and past-president of the Mohawk Valley Business Women’s Network, and Church Council President and Worship Committee Chair at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She’s fond of reading novels, mostly mysteries, science fiction/fantasy and political intrigue.

“All of the partners here have a significant amount of client interaction and I love that…working with and teaching my clients…we really become friends. And we go out and visit our clients regularly, especially if they have an emergency. We’ll stop in to see them, no problem.

“A big advantage at Gustafson & Wargo is that my partners and I are part of the same team. We present our clients’ situations to each other all of the time. And not all firms work that way. Between all of the CPAs at G&W, our clients get the best expertise there is. ”

Liz graduated from Utica College in 1991 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. She joined Gustafson & Co. right after graduation and has been there ever since. She’s now a partner working from the Utica office. Her expertise is in small business accounting, governmental audits, and counseling clients with advice on small business.

Liz and her two children live in Whitesboro, New York. Her hobbies revolve around the kids: field hockey, karate, volleyball, orchestra, cheerleading and more. She also teaches religious education at Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Utica, NY.

“I liked growing up working at my parents’ Clayton Marina on the St. Lawrence River. That’s why I began college as a business major. But after one of my professors complimented me on my strength in accounting, I changed majors from business to accounting. Getting my CPA was perfect for me because I still enjoy working with so many different businesses.

“At Gustafson and Wargo we’re interested in solving the problems our clients have that keep them up at night. Seven of our twelve staff members are CPAs and we’ve experienced practically every business problem there is. Our roots at G&W are in farm accounts but as we expand here in the Mohawk Valley, our clients include manufacturing, non-profits, retail, and medical practices.”

Charlie graduated with a degree in accounting from Clarkson University in 1989. After a brief time at an international accounting firm in Syracuse, NY, he joined Gustafson & Co. in 1991 and completed his CPA in 1992. He is managing partner and works from the Canastota office.

Charlie lives in Oneida with his wife and three daughters. He’s board member and treasurer of both the Madison County Office for the Aging and Oneida Public Library. He and the family enjoy skiing, hiking, and boating year round at their camp on Loon Lake in the Adirondacks.

“Beyond our dedication to timely, accurate auditing and reporting, I like to act as a sounding board for my clients. Here at Gustafson & Wargo, we get to know our clients well. It’s very easy for them to bounce ideas off of us. I listen and then offer advice to improve their businesses or maybe save them money on their personal tax returns.

“As to tax compliance, the rules, laws, and reporting requirements for business and non-profits are complicated, and we are committed to quality work. The one thing I really enjoy is helping our clients get things done right. ”

Nancy graduated Summa Cum Laude from SUNYIT in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. She joined Gustafson and Co. in 1990 and now manages the Utica office. She specializes in audit and tax work including personal, businesses, non-profit, and agriculture.

Nancy lives in Herkimer and is treasurer of St. John’s Episcopal Church. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Church of Christ Uniting and The Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement at SUNY PolyTech in Utica, NY. When she’s not in the Utica office helping clients, she’s probably reading a novel, a local history, or anything about the Civil War. Her best times, though, are spent visiting her three grandsons on the West Coast.
